  • Winner Named for "Home Office From Hell"

We informed you about the "Home Office From Hell" contest sponsored by Offices2share.com. Did you enter? Jason Welshonse entered and won!

Welshonse won the contest because he illuminated the sometimes frustrating and boundary-less terrain of running a home-based business, in a way that was funny, poignant and resonated with his entrepreneurial colleagues. For his creative efforts, Welshonse will receive a reprieve from his home office - in the form of a pre- paid 1-year office lease at an Offices2share.com location of his choosing. The win will help Jason convey a more professional image for his computer business, Ancient Geek.

Jason's "Top Ten" Contest Entry List: (can you identify?)

    1. I have to yell "Phone!" really loud when the phone rings to make sure all TVs and radios get muted so I can answer it.
    2. I have started to refer to my pets as employees.
    3. My customers are starting to think there's a lot of dogs around my office because my dog always barks when I pick up the phone.
    4. I have started answering my home phone with my company name.
    5. I had a crazy subcontractor threatening to come to my home to pick up his last check instead of waiting for the mail.
    6. It's WAY too easy to go to work on my day off. It's Saturday at 11PM and I'm entering a contest to win office space.
    7. I'd rather watch Oprah at 4 PM then do my billing.
    8. It's hard to cram 10 computers into a spare bedroom. Although I don't need to turn on the heat in the winter.
    9. When potential clients hear that I work out of my home, they respond with "Oh, so you're not a REAL business."
    10. FedEx wants to deliver a package, they want to know if it's a home or office. I always answer "Yes."

2 Mom's Launch Health Records Website

Have you ever thought to yourself, "There just has to be a better way?" I'm sure we all have... but these 2 moms provided a solution to their thought, and their idea could become a convenience for many!

Two stay-at home mothers are trying to make it easier for families to keep track of medical information. HealthTracks LLC on Monday launched HealtheTracks, an online health record-keeping system.

Jennifer Cofield of Greenwood Village, and Toni Wanebo of Grand Junction, co-founded the company in 2003 and teamed up last year to publish a book, "HealthTracks ... A Child's Health History."

Lisa began studying medical billing back in 1998 because she needed a position in which she could work from home. Lisa was a single mom with a special needs child and daycare was never an option for Lisa. Living rurally, there wasn't a daycare program within a 40 mile radius equipped to handle the special needs of her daughter.

Lisa began her medical billing studies with "one of those highly advertised at-home" schools. She completed the class and thought she had a pretty good understanding of the business until she decided to further her research online. Her schooling taught her that "electronic billing" was an "option" and neglected to provide her with any information regarding HIPAA.

Unfortunately, things got worse before they got better for Lisa. She found a company on the internet that promised software, training and support. She sent a check to them only to determine that they were a SCAM.

Lisa picked herself up and dusted herself off and, determined, joined a medical billing forum. In this forum she was provided with a great deal of satisfactory information about Synergy. Lisa decided to purchase a Synergy Medical Billing Center Package, which included the course from Medical Billing Course.com. According to Lisa, she learned more in Chapter 1 of Medical Billing Course.com than she did in the entire "other at-home" school.

While Lisa was receiving marketing assistance from Synergy, she continued her research, asking as many questions as she could... and then one day she found herself answering many questions in the Medical Billing Course Student Support Forum. It was because Lisa provided the students with well- thought out, precise and trustworthy answers that she was asked to become MBC's Senior Moderator and Support Forum Instructor. Lisa also went on to author the "Understanding HIPAA" chapter for MBC, which the students find to be extremely valuable in their studies.

Lisa operates a successful billing center specializing in Licensed Massage Therapy. Lisa's advice: "Stick with it even if you get discouraged, and when all else fails, revise, reword, revamp and redo! You will get there if you continue to work at it. I did and YOU can too!"
